My funny Valentine

«So many love songs are breathless with hyperbole, big on euphemism. But this one comes right out and says what's on its mind. "Your looks are laughable / Unphotographable / Yet you're my fav'rite work of art." This is the love song for people excluded by love songs - a fairly large catchment area.»

A fairly large catchment area.

«No one would be daft enough to risk a rhumba version of "My Funny Valentine". But that doesn't mean the song is set in its ways. The tone is always open to interpretation. Sometimes the tune appears to ring like a nursery rhyme, which is hardly surprising. The melody for the lines "My funny Valentine / Sweet comic Valentine" repeats three notes higher on the lines "Your looks are laughable / Unphotographable"; in other words, "My funny Valentine shares a crucial compositional device with "Three Blind Mice". And yet the song is built around an evenly descending bass-line, and the slight rise of the melody, against the slow fall of the bass can come over you like melancholy. Hart, it might be useful to remember, spent much of his life in despair and died alcoholic. Cutesy ditty or rueful lament? This is the gap the singers step into.»

«The pace allows Sinatra to work in the half-rhyme of "is your" with "figure" in the line "Is your figure less than Greek?". That is the only ornate poeticism in Hart's lyric - and this from a writer who was regularly lavish. An old joke about Hart runs like this: "Larry Hart can rhyme anything - and does." Here, though, he sat back, turning on the style just once - that triumphant "Unphotographable", where one word unfolds to fill an entire line. There's a crafty rhyme in the lines "Don't change a hair for me / Not if you care for me", but more prominent are the non-rhymes, in which the same words chime quietly together: "My funny Valentine / Sweet comic Valentine" and "Stay little Valentine, stay". They partly explain the song's mutedness, the sense that all is not quite bright in its world. The movie The Fabulous Baker Boys [1989] takes this angle.»
